Selecting the right bearing for your application is the first part to getting the results you are looking for.
It's unrealistic to expect a bearing to spin extremely freely, withstand all kinds of dirt, dust, water and other contaminants, and last forever.
For over 99% of applications a standard Abec 1 bearing will suffice. Higher precision bearings are used in applications such as dental handpieces, surgical instruments, aircraft instruments, tape guides and precision sound recording and editing equipment.
Most hobby applications damage bearings very quickly. Hobby applications are generally rough, vibratory and often dirty.
Two Simple Rules
- If you want longer life from your bearings, use grease filled rubber sealed bearings.
- If you want more freely spinning bearings, use oil filled metal shielded (or open) bearings.
